Biographies

Linda Doornbos is an Associate Professor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She develops practices where students critically engage with material that inspires them to wonder about the world and their place in it; exposes them to multiple perspectives of power, privilege, and identity; helps them connect the past to the present; and instills a desire to act and facilitate change. Before coming to Oakland, she was a classroom teacher for 28 years at multiple grade levels and contexts.

Annie McMahon Whitlock is an Associate Professor of History/Social Studies at Grand Valley State University where she teaches elementary social studies methods for future Kindergarten through 3rd grade teachers. She is the Past-President of the Michigan Council for the Social Studies and a past member of the National Council for the Social Studies Board of Directors. Dr. Whitlock has published over 25 research articles centered on teaching elementary social studies through civic engagement, place-based inquiry, and curriculum integration. She is also the author of Place-Based Social Studies Education: Learning from Flint, Michigan and Inquiry by the Book: Teaching Historical Fiction with the Inquiry Design Model.

Maggie Demarse is a fifth year doctoral candidate at Michigan State University studying Civic Science Education. In addition to her research endeavors, she has taught methods courses in elementary social studies, science, and literacy at Michigan State and UW-Madison. Before pursuing her doctorate degree she was an elementary and middle school literacy and science teacher for six years in Dayton, Ohio.
