Jessica Ferreras-Stone, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education at Western Washington University where she teaches social studies and multicultural education courses. She began her career as a classroom teacher, then worked as an assistant principal. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Walla Walla University, a Master of Arts degree from La Sierra University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee. Her work centers around the inclusion of equity and diversity topics in the social studies curriculum. Given that students from economically, culturally and linguistically marginalized communities are the most likely to receive direct instruction, her research focuses on how these students can demonstrate academic achievement when they engage in authentic learning experiences. To better understand cultural contexts in education, Dr. Ferreras-Stone recently engaged in a research project with the National Association for Multicultural Education in Cuba. This research project was particularly meaningful for her as the child of Cuban refugees. Jessica is proud to engage in this work as a bicultural, biliterate and bilingual educator.
Sara Demoiny, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.
